How to Install the UserWay Accessibility Widget in Squarespace

A few months ago, I installed the free accessibility widget by UserWay in my Squarespace website (the one you’re looking at now). It seems to be running smoothly, and hopefully is improving the ADA compliance of this site.

UserWay does provide instructions for how to install the widget, however, in summer 2023, Squarespace made a small change to the location of the Code Injection window. So if you’re struggling to find where to put your UserWay code, these instructions should help.

I’ve also included tips for how to position the UserWay button so that it doesn’t sit right on top of other important clickable elements on your Squarespace web pages.

Here’s a written version of these instructions, if you prefer

1) Sign up for a free Userway account

2) Click on Embed Code in the panel on the left, and copy your code snippet:

3) Find the Code Injection window in your Squarespace website

  • New location (summer 2023): Website > Website Tools > Code Injection

  • Old location: Settings > Advanced > Code Injection

4) Paste the code snippet into the footer area, and be sure to click Save

The following steps (5-10) are optional, however, I recommend them to make your UserWay button look more on-brand, and to avoid it sitting directly on top of other elements that are important on your Squarespace web page.

5) Return to UserWay and click My Sites (left panel)

6) Click on your website name (center panel)

8) Click the Button tab

9) Adjust the Button Color to match or harmonize with your website brand colors, and click Apply

10) Adjust the Button Location (both Desktop and Mobile), and click Apply.
This is so the UserWay icon doesn’t get in the way of the main action button at the top of your Squarespace page, or your Cookie agreement message at the bottom.

And that’s it, you’re done.

You can, of course, explore the other options for your UserWay widget, but these are the basic settings I recommend for getting started in improving your Squarespace ADA compliance.
