Author Website Inspiration: Fall Colors

One of the great joys of an author website project for me is working with color.

Like many of us, I have my own personal color preferences that I gravitate toward. (You’re looking at them here!) My clients usually have favorite colors, too. But we need to be more businesslike, in our approach to their website.

Therefore, my starting point for an author website color scheme is always:

  • What will best support and complement your book cover(s)?

  • What will best convey the impression, or overall “vibe” of your author brand?

The work of Fiona Humberstone (aka The Brand Stylist) on branding according to season has been hugely influential for me, and if you’re interested in how to use color in your (author) business, I strongly recommend either of her books. How to Style Your Brand would be a great one to start with. Read it, and you’ll be able to identify why cozy mystery book covers use a different approach to color, compared with psychological thrillers.

And if your book cover is doing a good job of positioning your work with your ideal reader, it makes it dramatically easier for me to create a cohesive online brand, with your website.

Here, for example, are some client websites that all sit beautifully in the “fall” or “autumn” family of colors:

Author and speaker: Lauren K. Hall

Author, consultant and speaker: Samuel K. Bentil

Author: Judy Juanita

Life coach: A Clean Slate

Author and speaker: Jessica Nordell

And I also shared this autumn / fall inspiration collection, showing how to create a website color palette from a photo that appeals to you.

If you’re feeling confused by your website color choices, think about the visual effect of what will communicate your work best to your reader.

Getting the colors right for your book cover design is critical, because your author website will almost always need to harmonize with that, at least until you have international publishing deals, when things admittedly get more complicated! If you bring me a professional book cover that speaks to your ideal reader, the foundation is in place for me to create a strong website for you.
