Purposeful Productivity Manifesto

I'm sure the term Purposeful Productivity means a variety of different things to different people. Since starting to use the phrase, I've really enjoyed getting a variety of perspectives on the meaning and nature of trying to be productive with purpose.

I've also heard some notions about "productivity" which have dismayed me, hence today's post!

It's my belief that productivity is not:

  • a masculine concept;

  • irrelevant for highly creative people;

  • about being busy all the time and using every moment constructively;

  • (for writers) simply measured by word count or finished work.

So, what is it, then? I expect this will be a work in progress but here's my first attempt at a manifesto!

Purposeful Productivity Manifesto

I believe:

  • Meaningful work gives me energy.

  • The time I spend not working is as important as the time I do.

  • Being purposefully productive means I work fewer hours, not more.

  • Self-care is an investment in my future self.

  • Sleep is the essential foundation of productivity, happiness, and good health.

  • Email is someone else’s idea of how to spend my time.

  • Busy must never be confused with productive.

  • A task will expand to fill the available time.

  • I have more time, and more choice in how to use it, than I sometimes think.

  • A short mindfulness practice repays my productivity many times over.

  • Tiny steps add up.

  • Even small successes should be celebrated.

What do you think? What did I miss? I look forward to growing and developing this manifesto, as we learn together!
